SMC³ Summer Meeting Explores Shipper, Carrier Collaboration
Hours-of-Service, Highway Bill, oil prices and the economy will round out presentations

Peachtree City, Ga. - April 27, 2005—SMC³’s 50th Annual Summer Meeting will provide attendees with the essentials for creating tomorrow’s business-to-business relationships. Sessions will explore how shippers and carriers can collaborate throughout the supply chain.

The meeting, “International. Intermodal. Interdependence. Transportation’s Collaborative Future,” is scheduled to take place June 22-24 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort in Savannah, Ga.

Capacity, infrastructure, Hours-of-Service, 2007 emissions standards, the driver shortage, insurance and fuel costs, border protection and homeland security are economic factors driving the need for the more efficient supply chain relationships created through collaboration.

“The economics of transportation are changing the business-to-business relationship, necessitating that shippers and carriers collaborate and develop long-term, mutually beneficial global supply chain strategies,” said Jack E. Middleton, SMC³ president and CEO.

Representatives from several of the nation’s leading carriers and shippers will team up to present collaboration case studies that explore various business-to-business relationship models. Panelists will reveal how their firms have transformed their relationships from transaction-based interactions into integrated, decision-based supply chains that rely on information and process sharing.

William Clyburn Jr., principal, Clyburn Consulting, LLC and former vice chairman of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, will speak about the Highway Bill and give the regulator’s perspective of how collaboration between modes of transportation can benefit the nation.

Scott Elliff, president, Capital Consulting & Management Inc., will conclude the sessions on collaboration by outlining key principles for achieving success through collaboration programs and providing attendees with tools to use in their businesses to pursue collaborative supply chain improvements.

In addition to collaboration, several key issues facing the transportation community will be explored. Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, chairman and CEO of Circadian Technologies Inc. will present the basic principles of circadian sleep science and relate his research to Hours-of-Service regulations. A session presented by Smith Barney will examine the fundamentals influencing today’s non-traditional and unpredictable short- and long-term interest rates and how they affect business investment decisions and individual portfolio planning.

Nationally-recognized transportation attorney John R. Bagileo, principal, The Law Office of John R. Bagileo; energy expert Michael J. Economides, professor, Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston; and renowned economic forecaster Donald Ratajczak will predict how economic trends, energy costs, political factors and legislative enactments will affect operations within the transportation industry.
